The Mothers' Union Relief Fund

The Mothers' Union Relief Fund, Whimple Church’s mission partner / charity of the month for June and July, provides emergency financial help for communities affected by natural disaster or conflict.  Although an internationally renowned organisation, the grassroots nature of MU means that it is exceptionally well placed within communities to quickly obtain food, materials and medicines for immediate distribution where most needed.

In January 2008 heavy rainfall resulted in sever floods affecting a large portion of Mozambique.  Relief Fund grants were immediately sent to the dioceses of Niassa and Lebombo to help purchase emergency supplies.

On 3rd February 2008 an earthquake hit the city of Bukavu in the Democratic Republic of Congo.  According to local reports, more than 10 people were killed and over 234 were injured.  Schools, churches, hospitals and other community centres were destroyed and damaged, and many were left homeless and in need of food and medicine.  A Relief Fund grant was sent to the local Mothers’ Union to purchase and distribute blankets, mosquito nets, clothing, medicine and soap.
