Missionary organisations and Charities supported by St Mary's Church, Whimple El Shaddai Charitable Trust
Rajeshwari is 6 years old and has 3 siblings, one brother and two sisters who live with the mother, and her father works as a gas loader. We are told that Rajeshwari is a very active child and loves to play with toys (especially cars and trucks!). She loves to dance and sing, and her favourite subject is English. The family does not have a house of their own and the income the father receives is not sufficient to provide the children with good food and education. Having heard of El-Shaddai the parents decided to keep at least one of their children in their care. We have been supporting this charity (and previously sponsoring Meenaxi) for several years and its latest Newsletter celebrates its progress in the 10 years since it was founded. Anita Edgar from Newton Abbot had been driving aid trucks to orphanages and hospitals in Eastern Europe on behalf of her church for several years until a holiday in Goa in 1996 changed her life completely. Pastor Matthew Kurian had given his life to Christ and was immersed in church and social work when he had a vision to go to Goa. He began working with alcohol and drug abusers and started a church with just 6 people who were mainly 'substance abusers', That church has now grown enormously, and a chance visit to a slum changed his life also. The desperate lifestyle shocked him and he began teaching them the importance of hygiene, clean drinking water and healthy food. His heart especially went out to all the children who were leading life in in such depressing and filthy conditions. He saw them begging on the streets, collecting rubbish, even eating from the garbage bins to relieve their hunger. His vision was to start homes and shelters for them but could not do so due to lack of funds. July 6, 2008 g in December 1996 Anita Edgar came to his church and shared with him that when praying one morning God had given her a vision to open homes for orphans and deprived children, and together they started the El Shaddai Charitable Trust. The Trust now runs four Homes, three day care and night shelters, and Manna - a meals-on-wheels programme in three major cities to feed children on the streets.
